first draft of film anaysis pirates of the caribbean

Film studies pirates of the Caribbean

The story follows pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and blacksmith Will Turner (Orland Bloom) as they rescue the kidnapped Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly) from the cursed crew of the Black Pearl, The film was directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer the film was made in 8 August 2003 I have chosen this specific films for a number of reasons I enjoy this film because I enjoy action films and this also has elements of comedy. This genre is action, adventure, and fantasy. Another reason is the mis on scene are good to analyse because there is different costumes. The music the makeup and the different settings there are many special effects throughout this scene.  The scene I have specifically decided to look at with more detail is the scene where jack is arrested this is because the navy have just found out that captain jack sparrow is a pirate. In this scene it focuses on jack making a quick get away.

Evaluating this scene it has a dramatic feel for it which encompasses the two main stars of the movie along with the British navy. Looking at this specific scene this includes a variety of camera angles, props, costumes, music, and stunts as well as escapism. The scene I have chosen is 18 mins in and 15seconds and the duration of the scene lasts for 2minutes. Straight away when this scene started I noticed the non diagetic music this is consistent throughout the scene but as things get more tense the music changes to fit the mood of the film however if the mood is more uplifting the music becomes more joyful. Also diagetic music happens consistently such as the characters voices and the sound of the chains and also the sound of the gun shots and many more diagetic sounds. The specific scene is just after jack saves Elizabeth from the sea as she falls in. After he saves her all the British navy runs over to see if she is okay, then they find out the jack is a pirate so they handcuff him and arrest him, then jack is left handcuffed but he uses his hand cuffs effectively as he restrains Elizabeth this automatically alarms the navy and the general at this point this is where jack claims his power he has a smug look on his face as he know knows he is in control of the situation.

There is a lot of mise on scene that is included. The uses of props/costumes are very effective I believe this as they really portray an image of the pirate as there is a hat, a sword a shot gun and hand cuffs. He is wearing very ragged clothes and his beard the use of the costumes is also very effective in my opinion. I also think that the use of makeup is a very important part of the whole entire film not just the specific scene that I have chosen, the makeup that is used on jack (pirate)  is eyeliner and his face appears dirty, the reason I believe that the director  has done this is to stereo type the typical pirate. On the other hand the makeup of the navy is very plain this is to make there faces seem more fresh .The costumes of the British navy are very sophisticated as they all have wigs on and hats and a red coats in my opinion the director has done to make them appear superior and they all have the top of the range guns and swords.

Looking at the contrast between the pirate jack and the navy it really shows the difference between them both. However jacks appearance looks quite unintelligent but we then go on to learn that he has a massive amount of determination to escape from the navy and Elizabeth. The camera angle start of with is a close up of captain jack and Elizabeth then a close up of the British navy,  I believe that this is done to show the character emotions  the emotions that were conveyed are determination and the anxiety of the British navy and Elizabeth.

The next camera angle that is used is a front shot view looking at jack and the view from behind this is done to highlight confrontational stances. The next camera angle is a side view showing how the pirate is restraining Elizabeth this is a side view. At this point the music is getting slower and tenser. Jacks next movement is a stunt this is when he kicks a plank of wood to release a host the host then on goes to hit some of the navy so this is a distraction as he plans his fast get away. Whilst the host is released jack grabs onto the rope which then takes him up to a higher platform in which he can make a quick get away. Interestingly the camera focus on a close up of the rope and host to emprise the power and the speed which is he is being lifted. The camera then goes on to a worms eye view I think this is done to show the height of where jack is this view also makes him seem superior and also to show the height of the stunt. Whilst jack is at the higher level of this platform the navy shot/fire there guns into the air the guns make a fizzing sound to convey the danger/tension of the situation. There is a wide angle to show the navy and the props and the scenery around them, the wide angle also emprises how quickly he has make his escape.  As jack is doing his stunt the music is getting more joyful and cheerful and more speeded, as he is on his way going down the rope it zooms in again to see the expression on jacks face. At the end of this scene it ends with a zoom as he is landing on his feet to show his final get away.

In gangs of New York’s there are many techniques that are used Such as the editing, mise en scene, the special effects, camera angles and the sounds.

The mis en scene (setting costumes props and makeup) it links with the era of the time however if they had jeans on it would look very out of place as it would not link with the time period and would also loose the viewers interest as it would not look right. In gangs of New York they use different costumes to set the scene for example one of the gang had top hats and nice clothing and  moustaches whilst the other gang had ragged clothes which were old fashioned and unclean. The different costumes between the different gangs showed more wealth on one side. The props that they used were weapons such as swords they also showed crosses which shows there were conflict about religion between the Catholics and the protestant. There is snow that is on the floor they used the snow to emphasize the blood and perhaps they used to snow so that you would focus your mind on the costumes and the setting around them. There are many different camera angles that are used such as the bird eye view they used this angle to show the tranquillity of the open area before the fight. Another camera angle that was used was panning I believe that panning was used to show how big each gang was and also to show the space around the. Another camera shot that was used is that the zoomed in a lot I believe they did this to show the emotions of the actors faces the emotions that I saw were anger vulnerability.

Billy liar was directed by John Schlesinger it is a black and white film set in the 1960s.The story is based around a character “Billy liar” which is his nickname due to the amount of lies he tells. Billy Fisher (played by Tom Courtenay) is a working young boy living with his parents in Yorkshire. He is currently working as an undertaker clerk his main jobs are to deliver calendars and also leaflets to the local residents of the village this does not reach his standards of what he wants to do so he pursues his dream of becoming a script writer for Danny boon a comedian in London but when the opportunity arrives, is he too caught up in his daydreams….Billy spends the majority of his time daydreaming of a much more interesting life. Billy fisher has a dysfunctional family which are unsupported of Billy’s dreams throughout the film. I believe his dreams that were put on screen were a bit over done however they were also very humours. Billy has recurring visions throughout the film for example he pretends to shoot his family with a pretend gun. Personally I think Billie’s dreams visions and lies made the film more entaintaining. Despite Billy being a lazy, irresponsible young clerk he still manages to be engaged to two while being in love with the third Liz (Julie Christie).Liz is the only person in Billie’s life who can bring him back to normality. Billie finally gets his life drastically in order to leave for London to pursue his dream with his true love Liz. The end of the film is a surprise to everyone. The moral of this film is taking a chance while you can. Overall I liked the film as it was enjoyable to watch.
